Writing Paranormal Sci-Fi: No One Puts Cherry in the Corner

Guest post by Casey Wyatt Hi, everyone. Thank you ParaYourNormal for hosting me today. If you’re a geek girl, ahem, women like me, then you know we are living in a Golden Age. At long last, popular culture has embraced things that are different, strange, and outside of the norm in television and movies. Super heroes, time travelers, space ships, magicians, and all manner of paranormal and mystical beasts can be found. Those of us who are readers have a leg up since the paranormal, sci-fi and fantasy genres have been around for a lot longer. Think Mary Shelley, H.G. Wells and Bram Stoker. Yeah, things that go bump in the night have been fashionable for a long time now. One of the great things about so much openness to all things mystical and otherwise is that there is no shortage of ways to twist tropes and bend genres. My first published paranormal romance novel, Mystic Ink, takes gods and goddesses from myth and legend and deposits them in present day Mystic, CT (a real place). …

Payable on Death

Guest post by Rachel Rawlings “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off too.” – Bilbo Baggins, via J.R.R. Tolkien Share this on Facebook>>> I think starting a new series is very much like the advice Bilbo gives to Frodo in the Lord of the Rings. Swap out the road for a blank Word document and it just about sums it up. The comforts of home or in this case the comforts of the world you’ve created previously are gone. No familiar faces or places to guide you along. Will you get along with these new imaginary friends? Will they talk to you, help you like the others or will you fight and scrabble the whole journey? Payable On Death is a lot of firsts for me- first in a new series, first full length book I’ve written outside of my original series, first time I not only thought about writing a new …

Midnight Riot: Review

Scotland Yard meets Harry Potter in Midnight Riot. Share this on Facebook>>> It’s unusual for me to binge read these days. I’m usually too busy writing my own stuff. But I got hooked on the PC Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch. Is magic dead? That’s what Nightingale, the head and sole remaining wizard of Scotland Yard’s secret magical branch thinks. But you can’t keep magic down, and mysterious outbreaks are happening all over London. When PC Peter Grant is approached by a ghost who witnessed a murder, he knows he has to follow the clue. Grant becomes Nightingale’s first apprentice wizard in decades. The series is funny, ingenious, and weaves ancient myth with modern London life, as Grant is forced to deal with river goddesses and demonic spirits alike. It’s the cleverest urban fantasy I’ve read since the Harry Dresden series. -Kirsten Weiss
